Venture Capital

Series A

We invest in Seed to Series B rounds, but our sweet-spot is Series A. Typically the Seed and Series B investments that we’re doing are kinda actually Series A rounds that are mislabeled; we’re less concerned about the label and more about the operational stage and risk profile of the company.

Occasionally, we’ll write a smaller check into a Seed deal if we’re feeling a very strong sense of conviction.

Incubator

Pre-Seed & Seed

Most of the companies that get selected to participate in the incubator are at the Pre-Seed or Seed stage. The definitions of those stages varies quite a bit, but for us the key thing is that we like to get involved after there is a product in place.

Usually the companies have raised capital and have an early team in place as well.

Foundry

Idea

For the most part the foundry companies are built around internal ideas. We come up with an idea, diligence the heck out of it, then recruit a cofounder & CEO.

Once we have the team we invest some capital and help get the company started.

Ascend

All

Ascend, the family office of Interplay, has the most diverse mandate.

The organization will evaluate opportunities at any stage.

Venture Capital

North America

We pretty much only invest in companies in North America, with most of our investments being in companies across the US. We also occasionally invest in companies in Canada and Latin America.

We do also get interested in companies that are migrating all or a key part of their operations from another geography to the US.

Incubator

Worldwide, but selling to US customers

We’ll incubate companies located in most regions around the world so long as the companies are selling to US customers. When companies are located abroad and selling to customers outside of the US we find we’re not the best partner to help. But for companies targeting the US market - we’re a good friend to have.

It’s important to note that our incubator program is conducted remotely via video calls. Your team won’t need to relocate for the program.

Foundry

United States

We only start companies in the US. To that end, we also only partner with cofounder/CEOs that are US based.

Ascend

Worldwide

We will consider opportunities in any geography.

Venture Capital

B2b Marketplaces & Vertical Software

The venture capital fund is focused on B2B marketplaces and software.

Incubator

Software & Services

While the incubator is sector agnostic, we tend to focus on pure software and tech-enabled services. That said, we have been inspired to support companies in a few other sectors in the past.

Foundry

Software & Services

The foundry is designed to fill gaps in our society. We look for holes in our social fabric - missing solutions. And then when we can come up with a commercially viable solution we build it. A byproduct of this approach is that we place across a diverse set of sectors.

Ascend

Venture Capital

$500K-2M

Our typical check size ranges from $500K to $2M. We also reserve capital for follow-on investments in our top performing portfolio companies.

Incubator

No Capital Investment

The incubator does not provide capital as part of the program, but our venture fund reserves the right to participate in future fundraising rounds.

For clarity, we also don’t charge a cash fee for companies to participate in the incubator. The only economic dimension to this program is that we take an equity position in the company in exchange for incubation. We like this approach; it makes us feel aligned with the founders.

Foundry

Discussed Live

We provide foundry companies with enough capital to break the cold-star phenomenon. Our goal is to remove one of the most painful steps at the beginning of the company formation process.

Ascend

$100K-10M+

Investments range in size from $100K to $10M.

Venture Capital

A function of market valuation

We are what we call conviction coinvestors. The conviction speaks to the fact that we do our own underwriting, but we only coinvest. We never lead. As a result, we don’t set the deal terms for the companies we invest in - when we invest our ownership position is determined by the market pricing dynamics.

Incubator

5%

If you’re accepted into the program we ask for a 5% common stock position in your company.

Foundry

Discussed Live

We get into the partnership construction details with the founders that get toward the end of our process.

Ascend

A function of market valuation

This completely varies by the deal.
